You know, I found myself out at lunch the other day at one of those fast food restaurants. You know, one of those where you wait ten minutes for that “fast food”. While I was waiting, I thought back to a conversation I had with a friend at work, where we were discussing those products and fads from the 1980′s. You know, things like the Rubik’s Cube, Boom Boxes, Break Dancing, and Trapper Keepers. We started noticing that as we get older, these things never really go away, we just replaced them with upgrades. Like for instance, the Rubik’s Cube became Sudoku, Boom Boxes became iPods, Break Dancing — well, that one sort of came back again, and Trapper Keepers were replaced with Day Planners.
Well, I did finally make it to the front of the line and placed my order. What I heard next hit me like a Slurpee brain freeze! “Would you like that to go, sir?” Still stuck a little in my thoughts, I said, “Uh… Yes,” but was taken back to the thought of my ULTRA COOL Trapper Keeper from 8th grade. It was one of those black and white checkered backgrounds with the neon green and pink paint splashes all over it. My Trapper Keeper was my ultimate “I’ll take that to go” device. Just think: these things contained folders filled with reports and notes, math homework, interesting pictures of schoolmates, and even notes from friends.
What replaced my favorite 80′s trend? Turns out it was my USB drive. Well, if you haven’t heard of a Universal Serial Bus drive (USB for short), you may have heard it called by other names, such as thumb drive, key drive, or even memory stick. USB drives, much like my Trapper Keeper, can contain folders that store reports in Word, budgets in Excel, pictures of family, and even email from friends.
We decided to focus this week’s podcast on getting better use out of your USB drive. So, much like my favorite 80′s trend and fast food lunch, feel free to say, “YES! I’ll take those tips to go, please.”
Enjoy the tips!
