Can you imagine what a mess the grocery store would be if they didn’t? Anytime you are dealing with multiple items there is a good chance that putting them in a container will improve your efficiency and reduce waste. Because of this, there is an entire industry that creates containers that are suitable for various kinds of things and a branch of engineering dedicated to designing the containers. Applying the concept of appropriate containers to your work can have a significant impact on your productivity.
What kinds of things do you need to, or have the opportunity to, address multiple times in the course of a day or week? Is there an appropriate “container” that will allow you to address them collectively rather than one at a time? “Address” is a very appropriate term in this context, since addresses are one of the things that are easy to put into containers. Many of the tips in this issue focus on using software to put addresses into containers. That is a good starting point, but there may be other areas of your job where containers could help you be more productive. Some containers are digital, some are physical, and others may simply be ways of thinking of things. What are the eggs and cartons in your job?
